Chapter 21
Another long trek through the woods. This time David paused periodically to make sure Will and I were still with him, but he moved at a quick pace nonetheless. More bushes. More trees. More deafening silence interrupted only by the sound of the birds.
âI donât know about this,â Will said. âWeâre getting pretty far out here. Are you sure weâll be able to find our way back to the car before dark?â
David stopped and turned to face my brother. âI know my way around these woods, Will. You just have to trust me on that.â
âIf I didnât trust you I wouldnât have followed you this far. And Iâm counting on you to get us back safely because Iâm damned if I have any idea where we are. So yeah, I trust you. Iâm only trying to make sure youâre aware of how far weâve gone. Because we donât have many daylight hours left.â
âDonât worry. Weâre actually looping back around. If we went that way,â he said, indicating a path ever so slightly to the right of the direction we were facing, âit would take us back to the car. But I need to see whatâs down this way first.â
âWhat do you mean you need to see? You havenât seen this already?â
âWhat I saw a little while ago, back at the house, was the woods. I saw where she was stabbed, and where she ran as she was trying to escape. I also saw that the killer ran in this direction. But I donât know where it leads.â
âYouâre thinking it might lead to some answers?â
âThat is exactly what Iâm thinking.â And off he went again, with me and Will close behind.
After a whileâa very long whileâthe woods opened into another clearing surrounding another house. This one was well-maintained. The paint job looked relatively new and the grass appeared to have been cut sometime in the past couple of weeks. I, however, did not find it any less creepy.
âOkay,â I said, âso weâve gone from Texas Chainsaw Massacre to Hansel and Gretel. Neither story works out too well for the poor people wandering alone in the woods.â
âI donât know,â Will said. âHansel and Gretel kill the witch in the end.â
âYeah, right after she tries to eat them.â
âShh!â David said. âLet me think.â
âThink about what?â I asked.
He didnât answer.
âDavid, have you seen this place before?â
âI donât think so. But thereâs something here. Something we need to find. I donât know how I know thatâI just do.â
âShould we try the doorbell?â
âNot yet.â
âReally? You were all gung-ho to knock on the door at the freaking Evil Dead cabin back there, but you draw the line at this place?â
âItâs not that,â he said. âThereâs something else. Something out here.â
âOkay, but maybe we should just try the door first. Just in case someoneâs home. We donât want to...â
âItâs this way,â he blurted out, and started walking.
âDavid,â I said as Will and I hurried to follow him, âI donât think youâre thinking clearly about all this. We canât just rummage around someoneâs property.
